112: Know your emergency numbers (UK/EU)

The FCO has revealed shocking statistics suggesting the majority of the UK population don't know who to call in an emergency while in Europe – do you?

The 112 line, created to ensure European travellers have easy access to local emergency services, was unbeknown to over half of the British people surveyed. Only 3% of those asked, recognised 112 as the EU emergency number, leaving the UK, Greece and Italy trailing behind the rest of Europe.

When asked by the FCO to define 112, 12% of Britons thought it was connected to directory enquiries; others believed it was a brand of perfume, bus route or a type of Levi jeans.

It was also revealed that, across the continent, three out of four European citizens were still not aware of the number's existence.
